Community & Companionship
In 2018, my wife and I moved to Missouri in what had to be the toughest winter we had ever experienced. Being transplants from the south, the February air was cold, dry, uninviting, and a bit intimidating. Unfortunately, this was also our impression from interactions with our community. For our first 2 years we feared we had made a terrible decision and would never have a sense of belonging in the community. It wasn’t until we all shared the need to survive that we learned how to be companions for our community.
Call to Action
In 2020, the pandemic forced us to tap into skill that had been perfected by generations before us, but have since long been forgotten over the years. With instinct to survive, we tore out landscaping and tried our hands at companion gardening! We studied inter cropping and permaculture techniques and were able successfully grow over 25 varieties of fruits, vegetables, and herbs the first year and over 40 varieties in 2021. Our garden has brought structure, peace, and healing to our family during some of the toughest times of our life.
Our Approach
We have since began sharing the blessings of home gardening. As a family we promote self- sustainability through horticultural ingenuity. We are a young and energetic married couple with old souls. We strongly represent the need to embrace an older way of living without abandoning the progression of elegant technology solutions. We are on a mission to bring the knowledge of the land to urban environments and the modernization of systems to rural areas. We have made a commitment to positive change through home gardening in soil and hydroponically.
Why Give a Dam?
Build | Grow | Live like you give a dam. ” It refers to beavers utilizing their natural talents to revitalize an ecosystem. It’s a simple play on words. Care enough to make a positive change, even if that means being a bit disruptive at first. Beaver Dams leverage the locally source plants, soil and water to encourage bio diversification and restore the areas natural balance. Beavers are a hardworking gift to their communities.
We Can Relate
Just like beavers, we are modern day infiltrators with a positive impact. We bring the knowledge of the land to urban areas and the modernization of systems to rural environments.
